Why does this page exist?

Because this web address was previously used by the Town of Ward for its own website, and people still arrive here looking for the town. A commercial page with no explanation would simply leave them confused, and that is not acceptable when the subject is a public body.

We would rather publish a plain correction that is easy to find than let anyone spend even a few minutes believing they have reached their local government. This page is linked from the footer of every page on this site and is left open to search engines for exactly that reason.

Do you publish anything belonging to the town?

Does anything on this site describe the town's own rules?

No, and that is deliberate. Where we write about short-term rental regulation, we cover unincorporated Boulder County, using figures published by Boulder County Community Planning & Permitting.

The county states that it does not license inside the incorporated cities and towns within its boundaries. If your property is inside a municipality, that municipality's rules apply instead — and we tell readers to confirm those requirements with the relevant town rather than publishing a characterisation we cannot verify from an official source. That is a data-integrity rule as much as a courtesy: an owner who acts on a wrong licence figure from a review site has been badly served.

How can you tell an official government site from a commercial one?

An official site names the body it belongs to, on the page, and does not charge you to reach a public service.

This is worth knowing generally. Municipal web addresses change, lapse and get re-used, and plenty of sites are happy to leave a reader guessing. The tests are simple and they work.

• Named body: the town, county or agency is identified plainly on the page.
• Independent contact: you can reach the body without going through the site.
• No paywall on public process: reaching a public service should never require paying a third party.
• Plain disclosure: a commercial site should say it is commercial, unprompted.

Why does a rental review site care about getting this right?

Because the people most likely to be misled are the ones with the least reason to expect it. Somebody looking for their town's meeting minutes is not shopping for a service, and they should not have to work out whether they have been redirected into one.

There is also a practical reason. A review site's only asset is whether readers believe what it says. A publisher willing to blur who it is on one page has told you exactly how much its recommendations are worth on every other page, and we would rather not be that publisher.

• We name the body rather than vaguely disclaiming “any organisation”.
• We reproduce none of its material, and say so.

No — we have no municipal function of any kind. Only the town or the county can help with that, depending on where the property sits.
